There is this stigma of seeing a licensed therapist and I decided to talk about this topic because so many tragedies occur everyday from people who are unable to handle their own stress. The stress of everyday living will drive a normal person INSANE. But instead of us speaking to a professional who has years of education, knowledge and experience of dealing with people with problems we suffer mentally or some of us suffer physically (weight gain). Then there are the people who take that stress out on others- the worst reaction of all. But who doesn’t have problems???
It seems as though people would rather go on national television to air their dirty laundry. They are on the news in a Special Report where the news anchor has to speak of traumatizing events happening at our local schools and other public places or they are sitting on the stage with the America’s #1 baby daddy locater. I don’t even think they realize that they are choosing this as their answer to a cry out for help. Now I’m not trying to put anyone down for going on talk shows or watching them either. As a matter of fact, I love that these talk show hosts offer counseling after the show is over! I just want to stress that it is just as OK for you to go speak to a professional who will listen to your problems in your local town in the privacy of their office.
Here is my own personal experience back in 2008, when I went to see a therapist after my daughter was hurt at a daycare she was attending. It was recommended by her surgeon that I take her to see a family therapist. At first I thought he was crazy for even mentioning the idea! But weeks later after her wounds healed, it was time for her to go back to daycare (not the same daycare she was hurt at) the look she gave me, the cry for help as she screamed brought me to tears . So we began family therapy just her and I. When I told some friends and family members we were seeing a shrink, I received strange looks and they probably even talked about me… that darn stigma. But I continued to go, and I couldn’t have imagined the relief I would feel by just TALKING about what was happening in my life.
By sharing my own personal story I hope that it would encourage others to use some form of therapy as an answer to their cry for help. Whether your therapy is seeing a psychiatrist, prayer/ meditation, exercise or going on National TV, don’t let the stigma hold you back from asking for help. It could be the most amazing decision you could ever make!
I once had tons of excuses as to why I couldn’t work out. I’m tired, I don’t have the time, it costs too much blah blah blah etc… But my biggest excuse was my hair! As crazy as it may sound it was the biggest hurdle for me, but I also hear the same excuse from so many other women. Woman who can relate to this issue are usually busy working moms or professionals who just do not have the extra time in their day to tackle HAIR. Whether you are black, white yellow or green no woman wants to be seen in public with “I just finished my workout” hair. Hair is big in my community, and NO we are not vain, we just like to look presentable in public.
So I finally decided that this was no longer going to be the reason why I couldn’t change my lifestyle and become more active. With doing my research I saw that extensions were a great alternative for me. I could get in a great sweat session and go straight to work. But that started to become costly and I couldn’t wash my hair as frequently as I liked. I tried braids but that made my hair break off around the edges. So here I was with this dilemma once again.
So one day on Twitter I saw a celebrity (can’t remember which celebrity) but she tweeted about this product called Save Your Do by Nicole Ari Parker. It’s a head wrap for you to wear while working out. The idea of the wrap is to absorb the sweat and keep your hair dry and in place. I purchased the head wrap online from their website SaveYourDo.Com and at the time they were running a promotion Buy 1 Get 1 for free! So I received 2 wraps, a full triangle head wrap and a small headband styled wrap for under $40 that included shipping. Another perk to ordering is that a percentage of every order goes to her non-profit organization called Sophies Voice Foundation which helps to further research and offer solutions for children and adults who are living with spina bifida.
Once I received my wrap a week later I used the smaller wrap because I was wearing a ponytail. I completed 30 minutes of cardio (treadmill) and during my run I never wiped sweat from my brow, whereas before I would use a towel to my wipe my face numerous times because sweat would get into my eyes. I was truly impressed! Once I removed the wrap my hair was still intact and mostly dry. But only my edges were damp. On the other hand the head wrap itself was soaked. The following morning I wash and straightened my hair before work. That evening I used the full triangle wrap while completing my workout of 30 minutes cardio (treadmill) and 30 minutes of Jillian Michael’s Ripped in 30 DVD . I wrapped my hair like I normally would do at night before I went to sleep and placed the gym wrap on top of my wrapped hair. After the workout my hair once again was still intact and mostly dry. I can honestly say that this product was worth every penny! I now am able to workout worry free of my hair!
Using excuses as to why you are unable to workout are now being debunked with tools and products to use that cost next to nothing. While the excuses and prices of taking prescription drugs are on the rise. If you have a workout excuse list it in the comment box below. I’m sure we can find a solution! As I once hear someone say… “ Be a problem solver not a problem bringer…”
Here is an example of my vision board, be creative!
As the New Year quickly approaches, some of us start to think about “New Beginnings”. The new beginning that means a fresh start to so many different things. Some of us may began to think about future goals, others call them resolutions, but any way you look at it we have a common intent to somehow be better than what we were the year prior. I personally decided to make achieving my goals as easy as possible and that was by creating a vision board. I chose this route instead of writing my goals down on a piece of paper that I won’t be able to find by President’s day because I needed a daily reminder of the promises I made to myself. I took the time out of my busy day to actually look for pictures or words in old magazines to physically represent and remind me daily of what I want to achieve. This way it actually means something! I then hung my inspirational artwork in my bedroom above my bed so that every day when I try to conjure up some type of lame excuse as to why I can’t do something, it reminds me that I can. I once heard someone say that GOD would not plant a seed (idea) and not provide you with the water (resources, funds, strength etc..) to help that seed grow into a beautiful flower…. (insert winky smiley face here) What goals do you have for 2014? How are YOU going to achieve them? Nobody can achieve your goals for you, besides that would take all the fun out of it and then there would be no sense of accomplishment! Place your ideas and goals on your New Year’s vision board WITHOUT fear, then proudly take pictures of you achieving them and boldly post them here!!!
